i have absolutely no idea what i'm doing right now.... i've tried installing tk tons of times and have had no luck at all!! i tried installing from rpm but i never know what to do after untarring it... i've tried to follow numerous instructions online, including instructions fron the tcl.tk site except i've still had no luck... i'm completely lost and i think the only way i can do this is if i somehow get crazy simple step by step process of doing it . thanks a lot for your time!!!
hey!
thanks for the reply.. but maybe untar was teh wrong word to use... :/ i was trying to untar a tar file that i downloaded but that one required all these crazy instructions that i have no idea what to do... and i also tried the rpm, but that told me :
error: cannot write to %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
(i'm guesing cause it was a src.rpm???)
any more help would be appreciated!! thank you!!!
[confuzzled@localhost RPMS]$ rpm -Uvh tk-8.3.5-88.i386.rpm
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
right, yeah don't use an src.rpm, they're not normal rpms. if you really can't find a standard precompiled rpm e.g. tk-1.2.3.i686.rpm then i think the command to properly use a source rpm is "rpm -tb tk-1.2.3.src.rpm" never bothered using them though.
You should run rpm as root (or use fakeroot/sudo). Just say `su' and enter your root password, then install the package with `rpm -Uvh tk-8.3.5-88.i386.rpm'.
