installing LMP3 into fc3 with ncurses 5?

I posted this once, but edited it because the previous post was really vague.

I'm trying to install LMP3 on fedora core 3 in the gnome environment. the mp3 player requires gcc, ncurses devel libs version 4, and glibc. I have all of these, but I've got ncurses v5.3, not 4. When I try to use the makefile script from the terminal, it spits out a long list of syntax errors and missing files. All of the files seem to be ncurses library files, and I assume that somewhere between versions 4 and 5.3 they changed the files or filenames around and now makefile can't find them or use the syntax/variable names defined in them. I'm wondering if there's a way to make this program compatible with my setup. I can also post the exact text that the terminal outputs if someone needs it. Thanks.
