Are you trying to boot into a linux thats not there?

After I installed GRUB, I built the latest kernel from source, from the KNOPPIX live CD, and put the kernel itself and the System.map in /media/hda5/linux. I turned off module support, so I have a large kernel (since knoppix chroot does not seem to work for some odd reason), but it is only temporary. I also copied /bin/bash to /media/hda5/bin/sh.
I booted my system...
Code:
grub> root (hd0,4)
... (something along the lines of: filesystem type is ext2fs) ...
grub> kernel /linux/vmlinuz-2.6.19 init=/bin/sh
... (something along the lines of: Kernel mode is ...) ...
grub> boot
But it doesn't work! The kernel loads up and so on, but then I get an "attempted to kill init" error!
Basically I am just trying to create a very basic system, the most basic possible, without even util-linux or coreutils. Then I will build it up myself. In this way I shall create a "custom" linux distro! This is mainly for my own education, because I have got to the stage with linux where I think to myself, I know a lot already, why not try to make my own distribution?
Incidentally, I can still boot Windows:
Code:
grub> rootnoverify (hd0,0)
grub> makeactive
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot
