to convert .doc to pdf you need to do that before you send it to the linux box if you want to preserve 100% of the formatting.
once in pdf format there are tools in linux to convert that to a ps so it can be edited.
for less expensive pdf creation there are other programs out there that do the exact same thing as Acrobat but for about 1/2 the cost.
[edit to add]
or better yet use OO in windows, then you do not have to worry about losing formatting or equations. OO has a built in free PDF creator if you need to send the document to others for a read only.

OK thanks ...
I will first convert on a windows platform to pdf and then somehow transfer them to my Linux
...
Just from curiosity thought ... is there a software that converts *.doc files to pdf in LINUX...?
I am just trying to have all i need on my linux so that I stay away from Windows!! I just have 1 computer and I have installed Linux on it ... (I have only Linux)
It would be good if Linux had GNU that can deal with *.doc Windows files as well....
thx again

As Lleb_KCir said OpenOffice converts .doc files to pdf on both Linux and Windows.

It does, its called OpenOffice and in my experience it works pretty well. You could also maybe try abiword but I doubt it would be any better than OpenOffice at displaying word docs. Maybe in future try and avoid overly complex linked documents created in Microsoft Office as these are more likely to cause problems both with OpenOffice and different versions of MS Office.

with the newer vs of MS office (XP and 2003) if the .doc file has a lot of extreem formatting you will have to slightly rebuild the doc inside OO both on the windows and linux platforms.
if you are just doing basic header, body, foot note type .doc's as most companies do then you will have very little reformatting to deal with. mainly in the spacing and font type.
if you are needing more then just basic letters and are using word to creat them, you are using the wrong tool in the first place and yes you will have problems converting that to anything other then MS Office. Word is not a page layout tool, it is for writing basic letters and not much more then that.
