I had a similar problem before, not exactly sure what I did, but it was a permission thing. I had to have k3b setup for normal user group to access the drives and write to them. It was in k3b, and it wasn't just adding the drive to the list, wouldn't let me as root either, try looking at some more of the options on the prefrences. But I fixed it when I added normal group access to be able to write to my drives. (Sorry its so vague, switched to gnome at the moment :P, I'll fire up my old box with kde on it later)
you installed the right things but you still need cdrdao :-) you can just apt-get it. also your kernel has no problem but go for the 2.6.8-2-686 still...
