instaling GUI in ubuntu 5.10


hi guys.

am very new in linux but am tring to get there. i have installed ubuntu 5.10 (server) on my computer. is their anyway i could get a GUI on it? or servers dont come with GUI's?

Generally servers don't come with gui's because they are considered an additional security risk (potentially). But if this is not a production server, you certainly can install a gui. Here's a guide to installing a lightweight gui, but you can replace IceWM or XFCE4 with either kubuntu-desktop (kde) or ubuntu-desktop (gnome).

Why not just install the regular Ubuntu 5.10--with GUI (Gnome)?

i just want to do a windows file server. and i was advised to use the server version of ubuntu. could the regular ubuntu do the same?
