Unhappy inittab file not found

Hi..... need help.... I can't get my system to boot, running RH7.2:

INIT : No inittab file found
INIT : Can't open ( /etc/ioctl.save, O_WRONLY): no such file or directory
Enter Runlevel :

Can anybody please help me pass this.... and I would really appreciate some explaination - why that happens? how to fix?

Thanks!

Looks like you have a bolluxed install, or you had a good install and something happened. The /etc/inittab file is what linux uses to walk through to bring up the system including what run level it needs to be at. Are you dual booting?

Hi cnJonhson, thanks for the reply. But, no, I'm not dualbooting. The system seems to be working fine the first few times, shut down was proper everytime. And then it started giving the error. Can the harddisk be of a problem?

-Regards-
