Improving Remote X Display performance

I'm currently using gdm to access from unsing the remote display. I'm on a 100 base network.
I've tried to playback movie files how every the playback is jumpy. The only file format the playsback at full rate is the windows WMV files.

Does anyone know how to improve playback, I'm using mplayer and xine.

thanks,
