guitarman-

"Windows is plagued with far more problems than Linux will ever have."

As bad as we don't want to admit it, the Linux OS does have its share of issues. It is the way the community handles them. Open source is the key to this success...

Greetings
Are Linux's failings as high-profile or as detremental to operations as Windows failings are?
Tell you what, when Windows can get simple jpeg photos right, I'll agree with you. My list of failures could ramble on for 18 pages (front AND back!) but I'm not going to subject you to that. When there aren't viruses for Windows terrorizing half the Internet, I'll agree with you. When almost every European government start switching to Windows, I'll agree with you.

hey

guitarman85281-

I wasn't attacking you, I was only challenging the idea that Linux is perfect and does not have its problems. My main OS of choice is Linux, but there are ideologies and practices (mostly regarding standards) that the Linux community can take from M$ and learn from them. Yes there are viruses, yes there are flaws and its not easily patched etc. But M$ does have a great OS, and yes Linux can learn from them and vice versus.

My earlier post about your comment, wasn't exactly a knock at the OS, if you read my poor grammar again, you'll notice that I was praising the community for the way it handles the issues that Linux has. Which is why open source works...

Question

I love my SuSE box, the first time I put SuSE in my box I did not have a freeking clue and deleted my win 98 insall and had a box that was useless but I did not give up. It took me 15 hours to get win 98 back installed and the second time I put SuSE in the box I paid close attention to what I was doing and had my first dual boot system, I was really happy about this. I would not go back to win if you paid me. Back to the topic you can reinstall your win and format the whole drive and have your system prone to viruses, bugs, and crashes rewrite your mbr for you if you want. But like everything at your own risk! I was mad as hell when I made the same mistake you did, but linux works on the few little problems that it has really quickly. How long do you think that win box of yours will be stable ?

Uh, Ideology yes, lets see...............M$ has the Ideology to hide a MAJOR Security Flaw for 6 months from IE users.................ya

hhmmm, Ideology #2----- lets take away the users right upgrade their system as they see fit by forcing WPA on them...........

hhmmm, Ideology #3...........In Windows Longhorn We will take away a users right to listen to the music they already bought and paid for by forcing DRM on them............

the Ideology list goes on forever If we let Bill Gates continue to screw us over.............D'oh

point missed

320mb,

Obviously you missed my point. The fact is, the Linux OS is not a dominant player in desktop market share. All I was suggesting was that the OS could use a re-engineering of its standards. I am a great advocate of the open source movement, and that is why I stated what I stated. There needs to be a greater set of standards for the OS, to move forward in desktop market. Much like what SuSE has done with their personal edition. There is only one GUI, a point and click installer, etc.

We all know about M$ and their problems, those were obviously not the ideologies on standards I was talking about. We can go on complaining about their flaws, their licensing policies, their monopoly mentality but that will not solve anything. The fact remains, to play with the big dogs, you have to bite like one. That does not mean do everything Microsoft does. But you can learn from their mistakes, and learn from what they do well.
