Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org . I've totally forgotten about this thread!. Well, it depends how far you want push OpenOffice's database. I was not able to link that with any other applications as Java, for example(I did not find any information regarding that information on google ).

But if all you need is a quick database to register costumers, phone books, whatever you need to keep organized in tables, OpenOffice's will do it. It works flawlessly with other OpenOffice applications as the Writer, for example, where you can simply drag an' drop your table to the document and it will be converted to text.

There're some front-ends for MySQL, but using a database like that for simple things as I suggested above is just like Driving a Ferrari F40 in a heavy traffic day in L.A. You will waste more gas than actually moving forward with that. A little bike will do wonders
