Question I need MS Access functionality!

What is a good replacement for MS Access, I figure this will need to be done with a backend such as mysql. But what about a good front-end. Is there anything out there like MS Access to control mysql from a front end? I have about 4 years worth of exp using MS Access and it suits me fine.. but since switching to linux I have yet to find a replacement??

Any ideas?? I need something that doesnt have a steep learning curve. I use access like most regular people use spreadsheets. I like access because I can get the information I need quickly with a query. (I use reports but I can live with exporting to a spread sheet and then create them.)

What does everyone else use.. and bear in mind I would be the only one to use it.. it is not something like a mission critical application. I just need useablilty

thanks
trey

I think, not sure though, that StarOffice has a similar package, called StarOffice base:

Star Office surely looks superb, I wish I could buy that one

i think rekall from thekompany is a worthy mention here, it's dual licensed as GPL and thekompany's standard development license

LOL, I was wondering the exactly same thing . Thanks mate for telling that . Well, looks and feels just like Access, but I did not find an option to export or even save the data source . All that OO database seems possible to do is to create a database (tables, whatever) and then drag n drop it to a spreedsheet or write document Is that correct?

I've done some few applications (like adressbooks and games/movies/CD's registries) with Visual Basic and MS access at school. It was pretty simple to use Access and Visual Basic (kinda loved them together, it simply fits...ghehe) and I was willing to do the same programs again but in Java and some easy to use database .

Does anyone recommend a database to use with Java which is relatively easy to use? (If it's possible to use either Open/StarOffice database with Java, let me know please )

Thanks Inexactitude and Matt Collier for the help so far, I wanted to help and at the end I was the one who learned a lot here, heh

I was not too impressed with the functionalilty.. Im sure it is all there i.e. creating data sources inputting data (maybe its not though?).. But tonight or this weekend teh above mentioned rekall a try. From the screen shots it looks like a perfect replacement for access. I will update this thread when I try it this weekend

Thanks trey85stang!. I managed to forget thanking you as well at the post number #11. So I'm thanking you now for the help

Looks like that data source-database has been on OOffice for a while. I've just installed Mandrake 9.1 that comes with OOffice 1.0 and it has the database. Very weird that there's no export/import/save function... Otherwise it's easier to use the spreadsheet lol.

But if you find a better DB or an export function, lemme know please. I will keep testing it .

Cheers!

No Problem.. I will do a good test this weekend.... on OpenOffice and ReKall... Im also going to search for a good way to export Access into MySQL or something like that.

once again.. I will keep this thread updated. cause there are not many good ones relating to an Access alternative. (except for ones bashing people that use access and that it isnt really a database )
