A bizarre thing happened to my laptop. A month ago I installed Ubuntu 16.04.3 as a second OS in my laptop with original Windows 10, just purchased. At one point I took the laptop to a distant corner of the house and it could not connect to the WIFI. I checked Amazon.com and found this "antenna" https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The name of it is Card King, Chinese production, naturally. I tried it for a few days and could not establish connection. The promised CD was not in the package.
On top of that even without the CD it blocked all my ports with WIFI hot spots. Now I cannot connect even if I bring the laptop to the router. This OS is a dead piece for me now. I decided to reinstall the OS but it seems it tried to install this second Ubuntu as a third OS, together with Windows 10 and old Ubuntu. I aborted the installation. I need an advice what to do. Thanks, - Alex
When you get to the partitioning part of the install, you need to select "custom" or "manual" partitioning (or whatever Ubuntu calls it) to point the install at your existing Ubuntu partition.
Ubuntu is an operating system not an application/program so you don't "uninstall" it, you install to the same partition on which you previously installed making sure you select to format that partition during the install. You will need to select the manual install which in Ubuntu is called "Something Else".
can you still boot into windows, and ubuntu?
can't you just unplug the wifi adapter and be done with it?
are you saying the wifi adapter did things to both your windows AND ubuntu install?
Thank you for the answers. Yes, I can boot into the Windows; WIFI is OK, and there is a chance that when I aborted the Ubuntu install yesterday (you see I cannot devote 100% of my time to my computers), so when I aborted the install there is a chance that the previously installed Ubuntu was wiped out. I did not see it on the black screen in the left upper corner where I used to have a scroll down with choice: Ubuntu, then Windows, and something else I don't now remember. I will have to double check it all but if it is true, it is the happy ending. Chinese products are truly dangerous, Chinese ballet not included. I am lucky I did not start with Windows 10 experimenting with that antenna.
Yes, now the laptop boots to Windows 10 ONLY. That Ubuntu mutilated by Chinese antenna is gone from the boot sequence. I actually prefer Ubuntu but not the one screwed up by the Chinese antenna. Good ending! Thank you all.
What is interesting is that I now have my laptop at the same place in the house where Ubuntu could not pick up WIFI, and the Windows 10 works very well, I can access the Internet, etc.
