Dear Experts,

I currently have a dual boot machine.
Windows XP on C:
Redhat Linux is on a second drive.
MBR and /boot with grub are on the C: drive.


I spent a lot of time installing and configuring the Linux applications on the secondary drive.

This machine is rather slow.
I'd like to remove the second drive with apps on Linux and put it into a different faster machine.
Ideally, make it another dual boot machine.

So far, with the Redhat install program, I can only see installing the whole operating system,
which would wipe out everything.

Is is possible to install just the MBR and grub alone?
What is the secret?

what version of RHEL ????
in the 5 series 5.6 is the current
but RHEL 6.0 is out ( you can not "update" 5.6 to 6.0 )
a clean install is needed for 6


just pop in the rhel 5 install dvd and there is an option to" upgrade"
in those options there is an option to install grub or not to install gurb
then run yum to upgrade the os to the current -- 5.6

If I understand you want to remove the h/d with linux and grub is on the windows hd and mbr. If so take a live linux cd that uses grub and install grub on your new machine. There are a few things we need to know before we can help with the procedure. We will need you to post the results from the command 'fdisk -l'(small L) from your new computer. The old machine still should boot if grub installed on your windows hd.

Larry, the OP will need more than just grub - kernel(s) and initrd(s) for example.
Best to copy /boot across to the secondary disk before removing it. Might as well do the MBR as well. If the fstab is set up properly, probably nothing to do after the swapout. Let's see that fdisk output, and a "cat/etc/fstab".

Right but if he is installing it as a secondary (slave) drive in his new computer there is still going to be work to do.
