How to install gcc complier

hi i have already download gcc complier from the internet and i have to install it. there are 6 steps top install it :

1. Prerequisites
2. Downloading the source
3. Configuration
4. Building
5. Testing (optional)
6. Final install

I m stuck on the configuration part , i do not know how to configure because http://gcc.gnu.org the configuration guide they give is too hard and diffcult for me to understand , is there anyone can tell me an easier way of configure or refer me to other website or even teach me how to configure ? right now i have done nothing to configure. i m very stress and my dateline is already fast approaching. anyone please help me. thank you very much.

Every distro comes with a gcc compiler package. You don't need to build it yourself.

Use your package manager system and install gcc & g++. The latter is the C++ compiler front end.

What are the commands to use to check whether the gcc compiler is working?

Hi there. I am doing a project on firmware and linksys router. A intrusion detection device.
I was asked to use the gcc compiler to compiler codes.
However I am lost. I do not know how to use the gcc compiler at all. The internet research is not efficient enough.

Does anyone know what are the commands to test and check whether the gcc compiler is working?
How do I know whether the compiler is working? What are the commands to test that it works?
Do i also type the commands at the command shell prompt?
I hope someone replies me fast as no one is able to help me with this. I am feeling so stressed up right now because the project module points is a lot and I think i am failing this module.

Very much appreciated if some1 is able to help me! *sobz*

You can start with typing:

man gcc

This is the manual for gcc. Generally man X will give you the manual for X.
