I suspect that if you don't know what you want yourself, you probably don't really know enough about the internals of the system to be turning off anything. What makes you think you should disable any services?

Matt, you made a good point. In answer to your question, I'm using my laptop as a regular user, BUT I still want to boot up my ubuntu faster. This is crucial for me. I want to boot up my system in less time. Right now, bootup takes 1 minute and 45 secs under ubuntu 8.04. The previous version of ubuntu 7.10 took only 1 minute. I got it get back to 1 minute. That said, maybe you can still offer further recommendations.
Just to let you know, I did uncheck those services at runlevel 2 that I found to not be needed. But, bootup time is still the same. And, there are still other runlevels checked in those services.
