How do I install X?

I installed Fedora Core 2 and choose no packedges because I wanted to try to install all the stuff my self for numorus reasons. Anyway I want GNOME up and running (I'm just using Lynx right now) but to install that I need something called X right? X Window Manger or something, how would I go about installing that? I do have a /etc/X11/ folder and a file in it that has the name X, but it's blinking with red background, I installed xinitrc.somthingblabla with yum then, writing xinit starts some proccess and then I'm back into the shell again (don't you say shell? terminal? command line? :þ ). Anyway, point me at some documents for help? Give me some hints? And please don't post here just to question why I'm doing this, I just want to learn. :þ

I hate to be a burst your bubble, but just install the packages. Installing X by source is a colossal pain in the ass, and probably not worth the hassle at this point.

Install from CD

If you have the installation CDs, just look at all the GNOME packages on them and install them graphically. The dependencies should all exist on the CDs and be handled automatically. I suppose you could also install them via yum, and since yum comes with fc2, with an inital yum.conf file for the core OS, you should be able to hook to the internet and enter

yum install gnome

It should get you to the most recent version, handling all dependencies, including X

You can take a look at the base package list at the fedora website and yum your way to all of the other gnome add-ons, also.
