How do I install emacs on ubuntu with apt-get?

It doesn't seem to be installed by default. I tried apt-get install emacs, but got this:

Package emacs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Does this mean i need to add another repository in /etc/apt/sources.list? If so, which one? I would rather not install it from source, since it's nice to have everything installed as a debian package.

Try typing

apt-cache search emacs

or

apt-cache --name-only search emacs

these will give you a list of emacs packages available to you.

Also make sure you have universe and/or multiverse uncommented or added to your sources.list.
...or if you like you can use the synaptics package manager to search and add repos.
