Using debian apt-get sources on ubuntu

Is it ok to use debian apt-get sources on ubuntu? I know that ubuntu is derived from debian so I was wondering if I can use the debian sources to install programs. I ran apt-get upgrade and it listed a whole bunch of programs that were going to be upgraded. I don't know how this would affect my system so any help would be appreciated.

I would say that you would be better using the ubuntu repositories in preference. I don't know what the effect of using debian packages would be.
