I'm been trying to install xine for hours...I tried to install RPM library for xine, but the damm package dun work and cannot install. I can only install the gui for xine, but since the xine library is not installed, xine gui won't install either.

I have downloaded the tarball for xine library and gui 0.9.13, but have no idea how to complie and install the library. can somebody tell step by step on how to compile xine library tarball then xine gui tarball? I'm running redhat 8.0

Shoulnd't xine be on one of the installation disks?

GT is right, if you are going to plague yourself with xine, do it as easy as possible, and use the rpm from your distro's install disc.

well how about you give just the slightest bit of information on what's going wrong...? we're not psychic.

Just installing the apps, either mplayer or xine won't really give you full functions from either one.

If it is DVD's you are trying to play, they both need some version of libdvd, dvdread, libdcss....... avilfile plugins and so on.

I have Mplayer, xine, and ogle all working extremely well, with xine being my favorite of them all.

FreshRPMs has most of the files you need to get any one of the three going. You may have to hunt down a couple more, but the basics are there.

If you are runing RedHat 7.3 xine is usually installed already, if you are trying to upgrade to the newer version you will get errors, I forced the install of the xinelib, and xinelib devel files, and then the same with xine its self and it works great. DVD's, divx, avi's, mpegs, WMV even some of the older quick time formats run well in it once you get the plugins.

You will also need to create a simlink to your dvd player, as root, ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd if it runs slow, add the line hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc or hdd whichever you player is to the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local, save it reboot and it will be running in DMA mode if it's supported.

No matter which player you choose there is a bit more involved then just getting the player itself.

For DVD palyback, ogle is probably the easiest to get going, followed by mplayer, and last xine, all will work well though once you get all the proper plugins for them.

not true, mplayer brings along it's own decryption libraries.

oh ... and... xine sucks,

I keep hearing people say "xine sucks" yet no one has a very definative reason for saying so.

It works very well for me I have "0" problems with it.

first of all i'm a newbie myself, so if my solution seems stupid, please don't laugh or criticize too much.
I installed redhat 8.0 and I ran into the same problem but after some googling I found http://psyche.freshrpms.net/ from where I downloaded the xine rpms.
so, to install them from gui just double click on the xine-libs rpm and if it installs, you're fine and if not then it'll give you a list of the libraries that are required to install it. In that case, download the rpms from the same site and after installing them run the xine-libs rpm, then the gui one and you'll be fine
On the other hand, if you are installing from console, type
rpm -ivh xine-libs-0.9.13-fr6.i386.rpm
if it installs proceed with the gui rpm and if not, download the rpms that are missing and install them first (you'll see the list in console)

Yeah - I am curious,too.
I got mplayer and xine installed and can't find much of a difference in performance.The only big difference is that xine has an official gui.What is soo bad about xine?
As far as rpm's are concerned for xine I always had good luck with the rpm's at http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/~jcm/skyblade/ got everything you need in one place there.
The rpm's for mplayer didn't work for me at all - but then thats what rpm's do.

personally i've just always found xine to be as cludgey and unusable as the 1001 naff windows players. decides to die for no reason etc.. and is not really configurable to any great extent. if you can change anythign to do with a dvd, mplayer can change it for you, and has so so so many more input (and output) methods and recognises so many more formats... it just can't even nearly compare. apart from teh fact that it tries to do all the gimmicky stuff like dvd menus, whcich are just a complete waste of time anyway,

I do have problems with xine due to the fact that it sometimes insist to use the XShm (I think) driver instead of xv.But that has to do with my graphics setup.As far as configurability goes - the gui gives me all tha options I would normally need there - got no idea about dvd though.
I do have videos that won't work on xine but on mplayer and the other way around - and one that only works with avidemux.
Never got xine to work with subtitles.Thats about the only real drawback.
Having a extremely short attention span I really like a gui to fast forward or backward or whatever at the click of a button - ok I admit it; no command line purist here.

What input and output methods can I do with mplayer that I can't with xine? What formats can be done in mplayer that can't be done in xine?

I prefer xine but am always open to switching my preferences, I just don't see that mplayer is offering anything that I can't do with xine.

Xine : X11 with XShm or Xv

and shedloads more file formats (quicktime, real, nuv and loads of others...) and ofcourse you have to have x to run xine... mplayer

i seriosuly think that if you don't think mplayer isn't more powerful than xine, you've simply never used mplayer properly.

Xine does support most of that stuff,either.One big exception is .rm.I was never able to play a .rm or .mov file with mplayer or xine but then I don't got a lot of those.
The big plus of xine is that it comes with a lot of distros and newbies can use a videoplayer without learning to compile stuff first.
