Having trouble install tar.gz file

I'm very new to linux. I'm trying to install the peng aol software on a mandrake 10 system. I've attempted to run the tar xvf [filename] command in the directory the file is located, which happens to be on a cdrom, I tried mounting the file to another directory and untarring it from there but it still doesnt work. The error message that appears says something like 'file not recognized as a tar file'. Could it be a bad file? Or maybe have something to do with the fact that i'm trying to run it from a cdrom?

you need to do zxvf not just xvf. the z says to un-gzip it first.
