I had rather suggest you try and familiarize linux with a live CD like Knoppix or Mepis - They are really nice.
Whatever you do you should be aware of the consequence of them especiall with formatting tools. It'll really be a waste of time to try out some stuff randomly and get it to work. especially when lot of documents are available.
as far as mounting is concerned. you can try 'man mount' to get a help. you can get help for any command with 'man <cmd>'
eg:
mount -t ext3 /dev/hdc2 /mnt
the directory '/mnt' should exist.

Yay! after much trouble I got grub working and linux to load! But now I'm on to the next roadblock, anways, thanks to everyone for your help, look for my next post ;-)
