gtk-gnutella setting port

Greetings
I am trying to set the port for gtk-gnutella(0.96.1) using the gui. I go to FILE -> PREFERENCES -> NETWORK and type my selected port into the LISTENING PORT box. There is no save facility and if I close the PREFERENCES box when I reopen the settings are back to default. I also tried to alter the ~/gtk-gnutella/config_gnet file but am told it was "altered (ie changed back) by another file" Am I in the right place?
