The problem was started when I removed openldap and httpd packages(using Add/Remove apps in gnome menu). Then, some icons on menus are gone including terminal apps. I've tried to restart system thinking it will bring back into normal. However, it takes long to view logon screen. I boot linux in single mode with success. From there, I installed x11, openldaps, and httpd but nothing happens. typing startx at root command prompt will dispaly big clock and huge screen of terminal.
What shall I do to fix this problem. Please anyone help me... Thanks...
If, when you type 'startx', there is a terminal program that comes up, were you sure to closae the applications before you left X Window? I believe that the X Window system may save the applications that you have open, which may mean either you want to cause it to close all the applications when you exit, or you need to close them your own self
As for the GNOME picture, if you mean the one that shows up when you type 'startx', I do not know this, but that may be preference. I believe, but I do not know this, that if you do not see it, it may be that in the preferences, it is not set to show up. Again, I do not know this. I would check the preferences and see if there is something there that shows up, or if that is set or not set, and set it according to your preference
@freedoughnot thanks but no thanks solution didn't either help the problem.
@penguin, after typing startx screen is screwed up only the terminal program but it doesn't look very well. By the way, i'm using fedora 5 I haveasked anyone from other forum and they have the same comments, "add/remove programs could meshed up because it would also delete its depedencies". They added that when removing binaries use yum at terminal window to make it safe.... Anyway, i was able to bring back the system by restoring it from my image backup... goodthing I have created backup. Hope, this will be the reference to some fedora user's who doesn't know about this thing.
