gnoem volume manager crashes

i have a weird problem. i just installed gnome-volume-manager and hal and dbus so i can get stuff to automount. if i run gnome-volume-manager fromt he command line it works fine but i wanted it to start when i logged into gnome so i added it to the startup programs in the sessions dialog box. everytime i add it and hit ok it crashes the sessions dialog box and goes away from the startup programs. does anyone know what is going on.
