Gimp can't open jpegs

It seems whenever I try to open jpegs with gimp the jpeg plugin segfaults and I can't actually open it. I can however view the plugin.

I read somewhere else that it was libexif, so I updated to the newest version, but to no avail.

I'm using the newest stable version of gimp avalible on linuxpackages.net, but I just can't get it to work.

Whatever you can do to help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Simple question - can you open jpegs in other apps - kwickshow, kpaint, firefox, opera...?

Make sure you have the libjpeg package installed. If it's already there, sounds to me as if the package you installed from linuxpackages left out some type of support. Your better off getting the package from a offical Slackware mirror or compile it yourself.

Yes other programs can open jpegs, and in fact, GIMP can go as far as to show me the thumbnail, but I can't actually open it for editing.

I checked and libjpeg is installed, I went to the official slackware site and did a search, got the package from an official mirror, found out I had the latest version, and decided to install anyways to see if it helped. But to no avail.

What might be to blame here?

Fixed it!

If anyone else is experiencing the same problem you have to upgrade to version 6.13 of libexif I believe it is, which presently isn't avalible in the form of a slackware package, so you've got to get the source from libexif's sourceforge page.

Thanks for the help everybody.
