There's not much help for this on the net in general so I'm struggling here. I'm running Mint Tara with Cinnamon and trying to compile maps and install them on my Garmin.

But it didn't help me. I'm guessing there are some packets for Wine which are missing but, of course, I have no indication as to what they are.

To clarify: I can download generic up to date maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl. Simply Download the*osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip*("Compressed file that contains a single image that can be placed directly onto the SD-card of the GPS.") file Extract the file*gmapsupp.img, and rename it to*gmapprom.img, then with Nautilus, copy the extracted file on your device, replacing the old (backuped)*gmapprom.img*file. I emphasize that this is copied to the SD card which you plug into your computer. If your Garmin doesn't have a SD or TF card you still need Garmin Express to load it.

I this instance I needed to compile a map of several European countries I visit regularly. I compiled it using MapSource from Garmin but, I need GarminExpress, to load my Garmin Nuvi so that the computer sees it. Then I can send it the compiled maps. Must be less than the Garmin maximum of four gig.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm a little surprised that you can't mount the Garmin filesystem. What happens if you turn the it off and then connect it via a usb cable to your computer? Does it not present itself as a fat file system? This is what mine (without SD cards) have always done.

Thanks for the input, and yes, I was surprised as mine mounted under Mint 17 as you say and could be seen as a drive. Very strange. I even began to distrust the cable so changed that as well. Restarting with it plugged in or plugging in after start up, all get the same result. Got me baffled.

Now that was interesting, on the command 'dmesg' it's giving me a whole load of errors. One concerns the trackpad which has always given intermittent problems and frequently ceases to function, so I use a pen mouse when it does.
However this set of errors is repeated for each USB port.
