I use aMSN and I always have trouble connecting. It sometimes takes up to 5 tries in order to successfully login. I've tried Gaim too and it has the same trouble.
Which version of Gaim are you running? If you aren't running a version that supports the newer MSN protocol, it won't connect. Try upgrading to the latest if you aren't running that already.
If you are running the latest, you may just want to wait a bit and try again. MSN regularly takes login servers down for maintenance.
