Are you typing in your correct username and password? If so, then try an alternate im program. There are many to choose from and they may work better for you. I have only used gaim for msn im account and it worked fine for me but I don't know how well it works with other im accounts.

Try the 0.77 version of Gaim
Here's a guide for installing it.

you can use a different protocol in the accounts manager of gaim (There's ICQ and then there's TOC) Toc has limited abilities compared to ICQ/AIM but works everytime with me; sometimes AIM has the same message that you have. So, try opening the accounts manager and change the protocal.

If you just need msn im, amsn works the best because you can file share with anyone and you can talk to more than one person at a time in one window which I couldn't do with gaim, my kopete is messed up. I had it working before but now it won't work.
