For the linux gurus, about dovecot mail server

Hi ,
I am trying to use dovecot - mail server, i am trying to configure it.. also im a newbie to linux usage. While reading the dovecot documentation it was mentiond as follows

Creating new users
Dovecot is interested in only one thing - being able to find the user's
mail directory. With maildir you need to do mkdir ~user/Maildir, with mbox
mkdir ~user/mail.

So does this mean that if i add a folder manually to ~user/mail , it will become a mail account. I require to do this because i am trying to implement a mailinglist manager, that will require creating a group on the fly.

This is very urgent for me, i have been searching and raising queries for the past one week without much success..

So please all u gurus let me know it this is possible
