Fonts question: how to get a full list of fonts in Abiword

I am using Gentoo and I emerged abiword successfully (with just GTK+ and without the Gnome libraries, though, I'm using KDE).

Now the problem is that Abiword shows only a smaller number of fonts than the total number of fonts installed and recognized by KDE.

How do I make sure that Abiword recognizes all the fonts? Many fonts including Times and Helvetica are missing in Abiword, while they show up in the KDE font installer menu.

I suspect I may have to do some manual config file editing to load all the fonts in X, but I would be glad if somebody can assist me here.
