When browsing the web I get the error that I need the Flash Player 8 to view a news video at Fidelity.com

What is the strategy for updating, or getting the plug-in? Try it from Firefox, or go to Linux Mint, or use package updater or use software manager? or something else?

I have tried a couple strategies but without success. Perhaps I have to update my version of Linux mint? Or uninstal Firefox and then reinstall the latest version? I am using Linux Mint Helina.

Erm, the current version of Adobe Flash is 10. If the website really needs version 8 then that's ridiculous. Maybe it's just a generic message about not having Flash installed that was written when version 8 was current and has never been updated.

Do you actually have Flash installed? Type

in to Firefox's location field and see if Flash is listed. If not, search for flash-nonfree (I think, or just search for flash) in Synaptic and install it.

Flash is a plugin. It's not part of Firefox. Updating Firefox wouldn't help you in anyway.

I have occasionally hit sites that seem to have a fscked up detection system. My version of Flash is fully up to date and works on 99% of sites, the ones it doesn't are ones that I guess are also looking for an IE install.... Do you have the site address? One of us could verify whether it's the site or you that's at fault.

By using Synaptic Package manager I was able to update Flash Player to 10 and now my news video plays. I was very impressed that Synaptic warned me that I had to uninstall a package to update Flash. (I am very new to Linux.)

BTW, the original error message was that I needed Flash Player 8 or higher, sorry about the omission.

Thanks for the trick of aboutlugins. I will use that again. It showed that I had Flash Player installed but I could not figure out how to see the version.
