Question firestarter firewall

Hello! I was trying too install firestarter firewall because it seems like a good program for a linux newbie like me. The only problem is when I try to run it I get this message:

A proper configuration for Firestarter was not found. If you are running Firestarter from the directory you built it in, run 'make install-data-local' to install a configuration, or simply 'make install' to install the whole program.

I installed the program by a rpm like it said too, and all the dependencies were installed. Maybe someoen out there knows what i need to do. Thankyou for your time and help!!

I installed firestarter using the Source Tarball, after I did ./configure and make I had to run 'make install-data-local' before it would work

Did'nt want to run 'make install' yet, just wanted to try it

Perhaps you will have to do the same, try and find where the rpm installed firestarter, may be /etc/firestarter or in a terminal type 'locate firestarter' once you find the directory, navigate to it in a terminal and run 'make install-data-local'

Hope this helps

Pete

When i type the make install... i get this message:

make: *** No rule to make target `install-data-local'. Stop.

this mgiht be because I used an rpm to install it. Could this error possibly be because Linux doesn't think firestarter is actualy installed?

I could try installing from source.. but the only problem is ive only had experince installing rpms, which are very easy to remove. I don't know how to rememove it if i install it the way you did.

Download the source and run the following:
1.- ./configure
2.- make
3.- make install (as root)

Whenever you want to uninstall the firewall, login as root, enter the directory when you untared the source and do "make uninstall", this will delete all application and uninstall firestarter.

This is from the Firestarter web site

Quote:
The Firestarter program accepts a number of command line parameters for manipulating the firewall. Run firestarter --help for the complete list of options. If you installed from RPM make sure you're running /usr/sbin/firestarter and not /usr/bin/firestarter.
Might help

How are you starting firestarter, from the command line ?

You need to log in as root to start it

My only suggestion now would be to remove the package and try a different download, did you get the rpm from the firestarter web site ?

http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/index.php

Done lots of searches on the net and cannot find a similar problem to yours

At least your unique

Pete
