Two things to try: Try pinging your "outbound" IP (i.e ping your Internet IP), if you can, then you router is responding to ICMP commands like ping, if it doesn't, then your router's FW is set to ignore these (which is generally a good thing).
Second, in your router's configuration web interface, check your firewall settings and open (and forward) the ports you think you will need (TCP port 80 for HTTP and TCP port 443 for HTTPS, TCP port 21 for FTP, etc). Since you are behind this router and firewall, you will need forward the ports to your computer's IP, using the NAT (Network Address Translation) table, so all these ports are "mapped" to your computer's internal IP.
You will need to consult your router's documentation to find out how to do this, though.
