Fedora Core 1 and VMWare

Hello, I'm running Fedora Core version 1, with VMWare 4.5.1 to run WinXP pro. Recently I left VMWare running XP for a couple ours to download some files. When I came back, the system had frozen, the whole thing and not just Windoze. I could ping the box from another computer on my network, but I couldn't telnet in. It wouldn't respond to any keyboard or mouse commands either. I ended up turning the power off and powering up again. I then checked the system logs, and found the following:

May 10 21:45:59 benscomp insmod: Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp/misc/vmmon.o will taint the kernel: no license

My computer is running dual AMD MP 2800s, with 512 MB of RAM, with half alotted for XP under VMWare.

This has happened before, too. I think it might have something to do with the fact that VMWare is not supported on FC (good thing this is just the trial version... ). Are there any similar virtual machine programs out there, preferably open source that might run a bit more smoothly? Any way I can make this a bit smoother?

Thanks for any insight.
