FC5 Crashes while booting. It's not giving the login screen

I have installed FC5 on my compaq Presario V6000 Laptop. Isntalltion was succesfull, but the login screen didn't appear in the next boot. After first login, while trying logout it failed. I tried in single user mode, I am able to login and using "startx", I am getting the root GUI. It seems like the GDM crashed.

All your suggestions appreciated

Support for FC5 will be dropped when Fedora 7 is released (May?). I would not spend a lot of time setting up an os that will not have any update in a matter of weeks. Skip to FC6 or wait until Fedora 7 is released (it is in final beta now, test4). Hardware support gets better with every new version.

If your stay with FC5, I would update it. Once you get to root cli: yum update . You have about 16 months (?) worth of updates, so this will take a LONG time. The updates may or may not clear up this issue.
