FC4 X Performance low

My box
AMD BARTON 2500+
abit NF7-s (nforce2)
Seagate 120g sata * 2
1.3g ram
ati 9200se

FC4 kernel 2.6.12

I've installed the ati driver from livna for my graphic card, but when using opengl apps like shake or maya the performance is not as smooth as windows does.Yes i have enabled direct rendering and fglrxinfo says vender ati, fglxgears 9xx.

even not in the 3d apps but just drag the window in GNOME the reaction is some bit of sluggish, for instance if yumex is working in the bg,and there is a progress bar dialogue and if i drag another nautilus window in front of it ,the bg ui elements (ie the yumex window ) doesn't like to redraw ,but lag for 1 second.

I noticed that nvidia has nforce drivers on their website, just wondering is this kind of sluggish normal on current linux distros,or it's because i didn't install the nvidia drivers.

So the question is :
Is Xwindows linux just that sluggish or it can be fairly smooth just because i didn't configured it well or i haven't instlled adequate drivers

today i'll give it a try.I'll see what happens after the nvidia driver installed...

Throw the ATI card in the garbage and use a nVidia card. The stability and reliablity of nVidia software is much better than ATI. ATI are crappy programmers. A GeForce6 6200 is faster and better than the ATI 9200SE.

Seagate drives are also sluggish to my standards. I buy either IBM/Hitachi or Western Digital because they are fast in many computing environments.
