i've been googling around and messing with transcode on this for a while now, without success, so i was wondering if any of you guys might have any pointers..
what i'm trying to do is use linux for some video editing...
i've got an old 8mm camcorder, and i've been able to capture material at respectable quality using my v4l tv card, using streamer.
but to perform editing, using kino or similar (whose v4l capture capability appears broken), i need to re-encode the mjpeg-encoded files to DV (kino will only work with DV files).
problem is, using transcode, all i end up with is a green screen when using the DV export plugin.
i don't like broadcast 2000, main actor is commercial & pricey, and kino would seem to fit the bill perfectly, but for the file format issue.
Sadly Linux has only a few areas where it is not ready for prime time and unfortunately Video Editing is one of them. There looks to be a very promising project being developed called Jahshaka: www.jahshaka.org.
It is still in very early development but looks like it is going to be a dynomite project in the next couple of years.
There is always Cinelerra which is based on Broadcast 2000 but their interface totally sucks and the program crashes all of the time.
I guess we can hope that Apple will release Final Cut Express/Pro for Linux but I won't be holding my breath.
Yes, I think you're right. It's at times like this when I wish I had technical / programming ability - I'd be tempted to have a go at some hacking myself!
Anyway, I've been persevering with transcode, on a faster machine (3GHz Athlon vs. 1.1GHz..), and it seems to work, sort of. don't ask me why - same distro, identical (as far as i can tell) transcode installations, same DV library, etc.. but i've got an issue with sound when i open the files in kino....
oh, joy.
oh, and btw, i've tried messing with pinnacle studio in windows. it would be a nice program if windows didn't keep on crashing....
i think i'm going to give up film making for a while, maybe take up yoga..
