Email alternative to Thunderbird for linux and windows using same data file

In the majority I use Xubuntu but sometimes need to use windows. Until recently I was able to direct Thunderbird in both operating systems to one data file on a NTFS partition.

Recently Firefox or Thunderbird have made changes which have started to produce an error saying that my data is out of date and I need to make a new profile. Having reinstalled a fresh copy of Firefox I still get the same error and am loath to try Thunderbird because the data is valuable.

I would like to find an alternative to Thunderbird which is capable of using one data file and is recommended by Linux users.

My Linux system is Ubuntu 21.10 and am using Windows 10

pick one from here: https://itsfoss.com/best-email-clients-linux/
or from here: https://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/...ents-for-linux
or use another list
I would rather try to fix that issue.

You need to ensure that both Windows and linux are running the same version of Thunderbird. I am surprised though that you managed to use a single profile for both windows and Linux. The last time I tried that (which was a few years ago) The linux profile made changes to the profile that the Windows profile didn't like and made changes to override that. This went back and forth and I decided to have a separate profile for both so as not to corrupt the files.

Since the data is valuable I hope you have a backup copy of it. You should always make a backup before trying something that could potentially corrupt data.

I see Blue Mail is mentioned in one of your links.

I use that on my android phone and find it very good, especially for multiple accounts but never gave it a thought that it would be usable on Linux.

Now wouldn't it be good to have one date file for all your email across all systems.

I must investigate that possibility.

Many thanks.

That's what IMAP is for.

I decided to use Blue Mail IMAP and sync Windows, Linux, Android and my wife's Android. That works for me.

I have also swapped Brave browser for Firefox and Brave search engine for Google on all machines.

Thanks all for your views.
