Emacs, octave and plotting nuisance

Hello there,

this is another tricky one, but it keeps nagging at me: I use Emacs' Inferior Octave Mode to communicate with an Octave process. Everything is fine, until I issue a plot command, for which gnuplot is being invoked. Then every command is being repeated like this

Code:
octave > 1
   ans = 1
octave >
plot()
              #output
octave > 1
1             #input is being repeated
   ans = 1
octave >
I use emacs 23.3 from Debian testing, octave 3.2.4 also from testing (I have tried 3.4.0 compiled from source as well, same behaviour). The Inferior Octave Mode ships with emacs 23. If I call for plots in a shell (without invoking emacs) the described behaviour doesn't occur.

Problem is, I don't even know where to start looking for a bup, is it the Inferior Octaves fault, the comint that can't handle the gnuplot process spawned by octave, a hidden bug in octave? Questions over questions, I wish there was a simple solution.

Thanks in advance,
jothan.

ps: however this problem doesn't occur on a windows machine with precompiled emacs and octave (mingw)
