some minor console nuisance

several probs have been bugging me as of late, and while they are not something that i can lose some sleep over to, they are still bad.

first one on the list is vga = NUMBER

ok, im with kernel 2.4.19 with added graphic console, have an nvidia gf3 card (play ut2003 somewhat playable), 4.123 drivers. svgalib is installed(that's for the next question)

it first i just tried a number everyone was using, like 765 or something, when booting with loadlin, it tells me it's not supported, so i set it at as vga=ask. after the boot, it only gives me 10 bloody options, from 0 to a or something. what gives?

the second one is a joint fb and svga q.
if i set mplayer to use the fbdev vo driver, it gives me this error

fbdev: Can't open /dev/fb0: No such device

i might or might not have set any or all of the options in the kernel when i compiled it. what are they and do i need to do anything else?

and for the svgalib vo driver:

svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.

that i cannot explain. i have a image viewer that at least runs (it is for the console and uses the svgalib at least i think it does).

thx for any and all answers ppl

didnt help much, he didnt specify what i should enable to enable fb in the kernel, and the HOWTO is too old and most of the stuff they say in there does not appear to be in the menuconfig at all.

and an interesting fact, i tried make xconfig, and went to the console drivers section and saw that frame-buffer support was blacked out. how do i enable it?

You probably need to enable under "Code Maturity Level" the option for "Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers". Frame buffer support is still considered experimental. After you enable the framebuffer support under console drivers, a long list of video adapters will be presented.
