Edit individual mouse cursors in Linux Mint 17.3 MATE?

I am presently using a small, unscalable mouse cursor set, apparently tied to the Desktop theme I have selected.

Cursors are in /usr/share/icons, I have a thousand of them (well maybe 75) and they all come with an icon that contains no imagery, and an off-the-wall name. They are images with a transparent background as seen in the GIMP. Obviously there needs to be a hot spot on the image, the precise point of action.

I would like to replace the standard pointer with one a bit larger, but keep the small resize arrows or replace them with two-headed arrows like the ones found in Windows.

I found a site that offered Aero-style cursors, but the files were all 404 Not Found. One thing I notice is there are a lot of how-to's that are outdated, undated and obsolete.

I'm guessing I should be able to find a large cursor from one theme, copy it to a newly-named theme folder in Icons, and mix-n-match from different themes for individual cursors.

Is there an easier way of accomplishing this?

If I make my own, what are the specifications, how do I set the hot spot? I've made Windows cursors using a cursor-making tool online.

Can I import Windows .cur files and rename them?

Thanks.

Here's an update:

I went into a Windows cursors folder, the cursor icons show me what the cursor is, just like in Windows, but the file type is unknown to GIMP. By contrast, Linux cursors have no descriptive icon; one looks the same as any other. Linux cursors do open in the GIMP as an image type supporting background transparency.

I should open one with a hex editor and read the header on a Linux cursor file if I want to design one.

Sure, I could edit one in the GIMP, but there is something about a cursor file that describes where the hot spot is, the exact part of the cursor that points to the machine where an action should take place, to select "this," to highlight "here," to add a point of "ink" to a drawing "right here," etc.

Is there any reason why I cannot substitute a cursor file icon with the image of the cursor it represents? Then it would be as easy in Linux as it is in Windows to mix-and-match individual cursors.

Very likely taking a Windows cursor and converting it for import into Linux would be a violation of a Microsoft EULA, reverse engineering. Making a Windows cursor from scratch on an online tool and converting it for import into Linux may or may not be legal, depending on the site's user agreement. I did not pass any bar exam or take classes in law school. This is therefore not legal advice and is followed at one's own risk.

I will look for an online Linux cursor-maker site.
