.dmrc file being ignored

When I log in to my FC6 installation as a user (i.e. not root) I get this warning message
"User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions"
Why? and how can I get rid of this irritation. As far as I can determine the ownership and permissions are exactly what they should be. Where is this warning coming from?
Any help would be much appreciated

Hi,

I had the same problem the other day. The only difference is that I am using slackware 11.

I tried changing the permissions to what it was asking for but it did not help. I googled a little and came across this hack.

The way to get around the problem is to relax the permissions by editing (on my slackware system) /etc/gdm/custom.conf. You should try to insert

RelaxPermissions=1

in the security section.

Good luck!!

Brilliant, Slackbat,
That's solved the problem.
Now all I need to know is why it occured in the first place?
Many thanks for your help.
This was the first time I've posted to LinuxQuestions.org and it was great to get such a quick and helpful result

I,m glad it worked. However, ironically I found what maybe the real problem. For myself I changed the permissions of the home directory to 700, undid the alteration to custom.conf and now the problem is gone.

"chmod 700 /home/david"

Which maybe why it occurred in the first place!!

I tried the solution in your last post, Slackbat, but it did not work for me so I went back to your initial solution of modifying /gdm/custom.conf. I now wonder if the problem lies with SELinux which is used in FC6. I don't feel confident enough to go mucking around in there!

For me, too.
chmod 700 ~/

I think this happened after I resized (shrunk) my home partition, where my user dir resides. Dut I'm not going to blame parted, maybe I did something else too somewhere.
