Unhappy How to play a media file/ video file/mp3 file recorded in harddisk/cd-rom


DEAR SIR,

HOW ARE YOU?
I AM USING REDHAT 9 FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. THERE IS NO BODY TO HELP ME OUT OF MY PROBLEMS AS MY FAMILY MEMBERS DONOT HAVE MUCH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT COMPUTER.
MY FRIENDS ARE ALMOST IN MY CONDITION.

SO I THINK YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON/FRIEND WHO CAN HELP ME OUT.

SIR , I LOADED MEDIA FILES IN WINDOWS BUT I CANNOT PLAY THEM IN LINUX AS I CANNOT LOCATE THEM. I AM ABLE TO PLAY NORMAL CD WITH THE HELP OF DEFAULT CD PLAYER.
PLEASE PROVIDE ME PROPER INSTRUCTION STEP BY STEP SO THAT I CAN PLAY MP3/ VIDEO/AND FILES RECORDED IN HARED DISK AS WELL AS FROM AUDIO PLAYER.

SIR I EVEN DONOT NO HOW TO MOUNT THE HARD DISK / CD ROM ETC.
SO PLEASE ALSO PROVIDE ME INFORMATION HOW ABOUT MOUNTING.AND SUGGEST ME SOME BOOKS PUBLISHED IN INDIA FOR LEARNING LINUX PROPERLY.

First please undo the caps lock.

next let me make sure I've got this straight. You have mp3s and video files on your hard drive (in a windows partition) that you wish to play from linux (I'm assuming you have a dual boot system).

Very well first some information will be needed.

on what partition is your windows drive located. to determine this please provide the output of both
'cat /etc/fstab' and 'cfdisk -P /dev/hda' (assuming the windows partition is on the first hard drive).

then once you determine what partition your windows drive is on you can mount it as such:
'mkdir /mnt/win && mount /dev/hda# /mnt/win'

In a terminal type

usermount &

Then mount the partition your windows is on. Then you can use konqueror (for KDE) or nautilus (for GNOME) to locate the files. Look under the root directory and then whatever mount point your windows partition is on.
