direct ssh commands to local tty?

I would like to log into a remote computer with ssh and issue a command that starts X, and I would like X to be started on display 0 of the remote computer. Is this possible? I need to get video hardware working on a remote computer, but would like to do all the testing/configuration from where I am now. I currently have someone on site go the screen and type startx for me, to see if my config changes have worked. Anyone know a way to do this?

you can startx from ssh and then log out and log back in with x11 forwarding to see if x apps will run. Or startx with ssh and then try vnc to view the desktop. Or if you just want to see if it is running doing a ps aux on the remote machine will show x apps if it worked without the logging in and logging out or running vnc. Or do I misunderstand the question?
