Digital photography: mounting CF card, and good RAW converters

I just bought the new Canon Digital Rebel XT 350D, and I want to know how I can mount a CompactFlash card (Lexar 1GB 80x). I need help mounting the CF card, and also want to know if there are any reliable apps for converting RAW image files. I'm running Debian Sarge on an Apple PowerBook G3 500 'Pismo,' with the 2.6.8 kernel.

I tried to find a solution on Google for mounting the flash card. I tried

Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1
And even to specifically allocated directories. I am met with the following response:

Code:
mount: special device /dev/sda2 does not exist
I tried several variations, including sda2, sda3, sdb1, sdb2, etc., but none provided results. When looking for /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab, neither were found. I also tried

Code:
 mount -t vfat /media/flash
only to be responded with the directions for mount.

If someone could help me out with mounting and with the program for converting RAW files, I'd be very appreciative. I wouldn't want to have to return to proprietary software (OS X) just to care for my first love of photography in my switch to digital. Thanks a lot!

What you need is gphoto2. I think most of these new cameras cannot be mounted directly. There is also a nice frontend for gphoto2, it's called gtkam.

how does the camera connect to the computer? Mine connects thru a usb cord and im able to mount it like it was a usb drive. I keep my card in the camera hook up the cable and mount /dev/sda1 which i've set up an entry in fstab as /mnt/usb. Is there an entry for /dev/sda1 in your fstab?

here is my entry for it for reference.

/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb auto user,rw,noexec,noauto,sync 0 0

good luck.

have you got the usb-storage module loaded into the kernel? I had problems with this in Debian Sarge's 2.6.8 kernel

try 'lsmod' to see if the usb-storage module is loaded, and then if it isn't, do

'modprobe usb-storage'

When I did this, the kernel mounted the usb drive automatically.

However, it does depend on the camera. Do you have a USB pendrive? If this mounts and works OK, then the camera cannot be mounted as USB storage, and you'll need gphoto.

One thing is your mount command is not compleate

it needs to be more like

Code:
 mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/hd
in the code example above you are not specifying a mount location thus causing this error even tho it looks like the device /dev/sda1 does not exist this error can still be generated with no mount point specifyed. I have done this before on accendent.

If that does not work then the best thing to try next is trying to load a thumb drive or something if that works then the usb is working properly. Another thin is check the usb setting on the camera and make sure its set to disk not camera.
