Detect connected (or turned on) monitor

Dear LQ users!

Is there any tool (or programming method) for detecting if a monitor is connected to the standard VGA output? I have Matrox Mystique graphics card, using ttys with mgafb.

Thanks in advance

It runs from the command line, if that's what you mean... I don't know about configuring X stuff without X, that's probably some lowlevel stuff somewhere else. I'm not sure you can even go multi-head without X.
