Hi, what is the default editor that comes with almost any linux distro like Redhat, Suse or Debian ? I have heard nano but not sure if it is included in all of them. Regards.
The most common editors on Linux systems are vi/vim and nano.
If you also have a graphical system it depends on the desktop environment which graphical editor is present, like gedit on Gnome, kate on KDE, mousepad on XFCE, ... .
I am asking about console editors, I find nano easy to use but I will look forward to see other command line editors like vi as you mention. Thank you.
You will find vi or vim-minimal available even in rescue mode. It is also used to edit sudoers. Nana and emacs will be available in all distros (except maybe not the micro-distros for embedded devices) but vi will be installed by default.
Definitely vi; it installed by default not just in Linux but also Unix (eg Solaris/AIX/HP-UX...) and OS/X.
In Linux you often have vi and vim, but you may find that the cmd 'vi' is aliased or symlinked to vim. Also, you'll find a minimal version of vi included on rescue disks and such like.
