You will have to give more information.
What is it that you want to change the default for? GNOME? KDE?

The default for what?
You can use nedit instead of vi, pico, emacs, whatever. Nothing is stopping you.
Now if some program is using a different editor as default instead of nedit, tell us what that program is.

It helps to include some information when asking for help
Are you saying you double click a file and it opens it in an editor and you want to change which editor it opens in?
People need to know your desktop environment, as this is what controls the editor that is opened, not the core linux system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment - tells you what a desktop environment is.
Two of the most common are Gnome and KDE, if you dont know which you have
gnome = http://www.gnome.org/start/2.0/scree...luis-glade.png
KDE = http://www.kde.org/screenshots/image...napshot01a.png
If it's neither post a screenshot of your one and we'll find it. Also post which distribution (flavour of Linux) you are using, which will help)
Have you tried right clicking the file>open with..

AFAIK, you don't really have a default editor for the command line. Because you just don't double click on a file there is no point in having a default editor. If you want to open a file with nedit, just type "nedit filename.txt".
However some command line applications, such as cvs, svn and mutt, depend on external editors. These have their own ways of specifying the editor you wish to use.

I have a question concerning the default editor. If I ssh into my server and enter "crontab -e" it will not use nano as the editor. How do I change the system to use nano as the editor? centos 3.5
