Post default console color

Hi all,

could someone tell me :
how can I change my default console background color?

till here, I was only able to change my prompt with:

echo -e '\E[37;44m'

but it keeps the default black background, where no text is echoed/typed....

By console I mean (no xterm),
only a plain ssh/bash session (slackware9)
using the nice putty ssh/telnet client...
