cups web interface

RH 7.3 2.4.18-10
cups-1.1.14-15

I am trying to access the modify/configure tabs on the printers page via my workstation using IE6.0. I can access and print a test page but that is all I can do. I have made changes to cups.config (follows) but still cannot get access. I have been reading about digest authentication and that is what I prefer to use but I have regressed to basic for know to just try to get to work. I now get prompted for username and password but when I enter it I receive the log-in pop-up and then after the third attempt:
Unauthorized
This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the resource.

I know the username and password are correct cause I can ssh it using them without problem. cups must interface with something to authenticate. I have set up the MD5 cups.

1. what else do I need to set-up basic and get authorized.
certificates?
2. how do I set-up digest authentication.

For the first part of your question:
Your cups login is root and your root password

anyone! anyone! I'm trying different ideas but none seem to work.
has anyone had ANY success setting up the cups.conf to allow digest authentication via the web interface (631)???

It works fine with basic but I want/need some security here.
please help if you can.
